Snow Day

Much of the East coast was blanketed with lovely snow and NYC was no exception. It started Saturday afternoon while we were at a Christmas party. It was nice to look out at the Hudson River watching it fall from the sky. The local weathermen had already labeled it Blizzard 09' but we were not giving into the hype. They are always wrong about this stuff.

We, being good city folks, made sure Leo's stroller was encased in plastic to protect him from the elements. He kept sticking his hands out to grab at the flakes. By the time we put our baby to sleep that evening and headed out the door to another party it looked like those forecasters were dead wrong. Nothing was accumulating at all. A few stuffed mushrooms and hours later we walked outside to a winter wonderland of snow! It was so glorious that I just had to drop on the sidewalk and make a snow angel.

I awoke at 4am that morning so excited to show Leo what took place while he slept. He decided to sleep until 6:30am. Once he was up I opened his shade and held him to look out his window. "Whas dat?" he asked pointing outside. "Snow" I replied. His answer? "Wow". We stood there for a good 10 minutes while Leo babbled on with amazement. I could not wait to take him out in it but I decided to wait until after his 1st nap of the day.

I was like a kid on Christmas Eve getting him dressed for his adventure. He was not too happy about all the layers, squirming and pulling at his hat & coat. He did like his snow boots which look very much like Tom's, Leo noticed with glee. We headed out to our backyard sans stroller. This in itself is a rare occurrence and made our little man quite happy.

So, in my head I had envisioned Tom and I making a snowman for Leo while he rolled in the snow at our feet laughing. I thought we'd be out there for at least a half hour and come back to our cozy place and whip up some hot chocolate. That dream may still happen but probably not this year. Leo took one step in the white stuff and fell face 1st. He was not amused by this. I quickly gathered a snowball and tossed it in front of him. He liked this. I gave him his own to throw and he actually got a little excited. But again he tried to take a step and landed on his face. Game over. Not even the sight of me making a snow angel interested him. He was completely over it. Our venture lasted a grand total of 5 minutes.

Something About Christmas Time

"It's the most wonderful time of the year". Really? Even with all the running around, cold weather, and stress? I inevitably get sick almost every Christmas. I guess I just push it too much like everyone else. I did try to begin shopping early this year. Most of my gifts were bought by Thanksgiving. But then there's the cards to send, tree to put up, gift to wrap and ship & so on & so on. Tonight my throat is scratchy..oh no.

On the up side is Leo. He is absolutely loving all of the lights in our neighborhood. We take a tour every night. And he really does like Santa and our tree. In fact whenever he walks into the living room from a nap he says"WOW"! I can't wait to watch him open presents Christmas morning. He gets very excited even when he gets clothes for a present. Having a child really does make you remember the true meaning of this holiday season. Thank you Mr. Leo for showing mommy what true joy is.

New York State of Mind?

Alrighty then, here's another political vent coming your way. This week, right here in NY our senate voted against the gay marriage bill. I was quite surprised by this as were many of my fellow New Yorkers, especially those that live in the Big Apple. And we are angry, too. I mean it's legal in IOWA but not NY?!

I live in the fashion & financial capital of the world. A place where art, music and avant-garde theater still thrive. It's a place where gay men and women can walk down the street holding hands & display other forms of PDA without getting hassled. They work hard and raise their families just like the rest of us. They are a welcomed part of our communities. Yes not all of NY is the city. There are some pretty conservative areas. 8 Democrats voted against this bill. But the real shocker is that 6 of them represent NYC! What?! When will everyone realize that gay marriage is not a political, religious or even moral issue? It is an issue of civil rights. And they deserve to have them just like the rest of us.

Since I'm on a rant I may as well mention another issue close to my heart - Healthcare. I'm astounded that in almost 2010, we are still fighting for this issue for all Americans. I'm so over all the "It's socialism" BS. Give me a break! We are the only civilized country in the world where not everyone has the right to health care. We pay more for insurance than anyone else & in turn our insurance companies make more profit than anywhere else in the world. In fact, in most of the other countries they do not profit from their sick citizens.

Let's put in in perspective. The "public option" would help create another avenue for Americans who are uninsured, under insured, dropped by their current insurance carriers, have pre-existing conditions or simply can't afford their current plans. They then would form quite a large group that can then compete with the big insurance companies. What? Did I say COMPETE? The public option would finally help create real COMPETITION for the multi-billion dollar insurance companies?! Why that's sooooo un-American!

Any conservative Democrat or Republican Senator that is against the public option is in the pocket of these big insurance companies. Do not be fooled. They do not have your best interest at heart. They do not care about protecting America from the depths of Socialism. They care about one thing only; getting campaign donations, favors, trips and presents from the big money that these insurance companies are giving to them. Come on America, we've never been closer to achieving this. Stand up and let your voices be heard before it's too late!

Whooo. OK. I'm getting off of my soapbox now. Have a good night.
